Virginia Cooperative Extension - Knowledge for the CommonWealth

Dr. Steven C. Nickerson is new Department Head of Dairy Science effective on August 1st.

Dr. Nickerson is currently Professor and Director of the Mastitis Research Laboratory at the Hill Farm Research Station in Homer, LA. He has been at the research station since 1981. Dr. Nickerson is from Stoneham, Massachusetts and has a B.S. from the University of Maine and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Virginia Tech. At Virginia Tech he worked with Dr. Bill Heald in the area of mammary gland physiology and mastitis. He also spent time as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Purdue University and USDA in Beltsville, MD. He has received numerous awards including the American Dairy Science Associations Agway Inc. Young Scientist Award in Dairy Production and the West Agro, Inc. Award for Mastitis Abatement. His research has direct application to current dairy production practices and he has presented his results to dairy audiences throughout the United States and around the world. He will be a vigorous supporter of the Virginia dairy industry and the Department of Dairy Science. We feel very fortunate to have obtained the services of someone of his statue.
