Livestock Update, March 2002

The Virginia Beef Expo is a showcase for Virginia's seedstock cattle industry and youth with beef cattle interests. The schedule includes sales of registered breeds of cattle on Friday and a large commercial heifer sale on Saturday. Youth activities occur on both days, but many more of them happen on Saturday. Here's the details:

Youth cattle will be arriving throughout the day on Friday, setting up in the tents that will be put up alongside the barn complex. The Steer Show, which is cosponsored by the Va Tech Block & Bridle Club, will be held on Friday evening beginning at 6 pm. Steers must arrive by 4 pm in order to be checked-in for the show.

Saturday, April 20

Youth cattle will be housed in the tents adjacent to the barn complex. They will be allowed to move into barn areas vacated by cattle that were sold on Friday as that space becomes available.

EXHIBITORS MUST BE CURRENTLY-ENROLLED MEMBERS OF 4-H OR FFA IN VIRGINIA.

  1. Heifers may arrive during the day on Friday, April 19, and should be in place by 6:00 pm.
  2. Shows are scheduled for Saturday, April 20, Commercial Heifers at 10:30 am and Other Registered Breeds at 4:00 pm.
  3. All Heifers must be born on or after June 1, 2000, and owned by the exhibitor.
  4. Exhibitors must have their 9th birthday by September 30, 2002 and not have had their 19th birthday before January 1, 2002.
  5. Classes will be determined after all entries are received, and will be established by age of the heifer.
  6. Heifers will be shown dry. No artificial substances may be applied to the hair. No butt fans will be allowed.
  7. Other Registered Heifers are breeds other than Angus, Simmental, Hereford, Red Angus, and Shorthorn. Heifer must be owned, in care of, and registration transferred to the name of the exhibitor by January 1, 2002.
  8. Commercial Replacement Heifers are less than 3/4 blood, unregistered, grade, or crossbreds.
  9. Youth exhibitors are expected to be the primary care provider for their cattle. Assistance on show day may only be provided by the parents or other members of the immediate family, a bona fide 4-H volunteer leader, Extension Agent, FFA Instructor, or another youth exhibitor with cattle entered in the show
  10. An entry fee of $8.00 per heifer must accompany your entry.
  11. Please make check payable to Virginia 4-H Foundation.
  12. Entries must be postmarked by - April 1, 2002.

EXHIBITORS MUST BE CURRENTLY-ENROLLED MEMBERS OF 4-H OR FFA IN VIRGINIA.

Steers will be judged as market steer prospects destined to be finished for summer/fall shows. They will NOT be judged as market-ready steers.

Steers may arrive at the fairgrounds beginning Friday morning, April 19, 2002. They must be on the grounds by 4 pm. Steers will be measured for hip height and weighed FROM 12:00 noon through 4:00 pm. This information will be used to put steers into classes.

Show is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Friday, April 19.

Exhibitors must be Virginia residents who have their 9th birthday by September 30, 2002 and not have had their 19th birthday before January 1, 2002.

All steers must be born on or after October 1, 2000, and owned by and in the care of the exhibitor by April 1, 2002.

Steers will be shown dry. No artificial substances may be applied to the hair. No butt fans will be allowed.

Youth exhibitors are expected to be the primary care provider for their cattle. A maximum of 2 steers may be entered by each exhibitor.

Awards: The Virginia Tech Block & Bridle Club will coordinate the awards for the show. Special awards will be provided to recognize Champion, Reserve Champion, and class winner exhibitors. Ribbons awarded to all placings in the show.
