New Southwest Bull Test Facility to Host Open House March 20th

Livestock Update, February 2005

Dr. Scott P. Greiner Extension Animal Scientist, Beef, VA Tech

The Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association's Southwest Virginia Bull Test is being conducted at a new location in 2004-05. The bulls are being developed at Hillwinds Farm, owned and operated by Tim Sutphin of Dublin, Virginia. Cattle producers and others interested are invited to attend the annual Open House which will be held at the new facility on Sunday afternoon, March 20th from 1:30 to 5:00 pm. The station is located just outside Dublin, Virginia. From Dublin, travel south on Route 11 just over two miles and turn right on Thornspring Road/Rt. 643 (Cougar Express convenience store on corner). Proceed on Thornspring Road a little over a mile and the facility will be on your left.

In this year's group of senior (fall-born) bulls, there are 87 bulls currently on test. These include 57 Angus, 14 Charolais, 3 Gelbvieh, 1 Limousin, and 12 Simmental. There are a total of 111 junior (spring-born) bulls on feed which include 72 Angus, 16 Charolais, 7 Gelbvieh, and 16 Simmental. The top two-thirds of each age group will be sold on Saturday, March 26th at 12:00 noon. The sale will be held at the Danny Umberger sale facility, just outside Wytheville (same sale location as in past).

Complete information on the bulls, Open House, and sale can be found on the VA BCIA website http://bcia.apsc.vt.edu, or phone 540/231-9163.
