83 BCIA Culpeper Junior Bulls Average $1592

A wet, cool day welcomed a capacity crowd at the 40th Annual Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association Culpeper junior bull sale on Friday, April 10 at Culpeper, Virginia. Eighty-three bulls representing the top performing two-thirds of the 126 bulls tested, sold for an average price of $1592. Individual breed averages were as follows: 71 Angus at $1630, 8 Polled Hereford at $1297, 2 Simmental at $1500 and 2 Salers at $1500.

The top selling bull was an Angus, Lot #188, consigned by Holly Hill Farms at Mt. Sidney, Virginia. Two-thirds interest and full possession was purchased by Ray T. Cannon of Castleton, Virginia for $4000. This outstanding son of HHF Midas 2C out of a Tehama Bando 155 daughter had an adjusted 205 day weight of 793 pounds, ratio 110, a test ADG of 3.77 pounds, ratio 109, and an adjusted yearling weight of 1321 pounds, ratio 117. His EPDs were birth weight +3.2, weaning weight +36, maternal milk +23 and yearling weight +69. The second highest selling bull was also an Angus. He was Lot #131 consigned by Brandy Rock Farm at Brandy Station, Virginia. Two-thirds interest and full possession brought $3600 on the bid of Harper Phillips of Waynesboro, Virginia. This son of Wampler EXT W437 had an adjusted weaning weight of 742, ratio 106, test ADG of 3.86, ratio 112, and an adjusted yearling weight of 1282, ratio 114. His EPDs were birth weight +1.5, weaning weight +36, maternal milk +19 and yearling weight +63.

The top selling Polled Hereford bull was Lot #232, a son of ALLG 452M Remington 219U consigned by Spring Hill Ranch at Staunton, Virginia and sold at $2700 to Rokeby Farms at Upperville, Virginia. He had an adjusted weaning weight of 670, ratio 110, test ADG of 3.35, ratio 112, and an adjusted yearling weight of 1070, ratio 105. His EPDs were birth weight -.3, weaning weight +28, maternal milk +28 and yearling weight +46.

The top selling Simmental bull was Lot #412, a black polled son of Trio Black Oak 16D consigned by Trio Farm Inc. at Luray, Virginia. He brought $1800 and went to Gene Rumsey of Spottsylvania, Virginia. He had an adjusted weaning weight of 644 pounds, ratio 103, a test ADG of 4.07, ratio 113, and an adjusted yearling weight of 1186, ratio 103. His EPDs were birth weight +5.0, weaning weight +36, maternal milk +16 and yearling weight +65.

The two polled black Salers bulls consigned by Cloverdale Farm at Winchester, Virginia each brought $1500. Lot #801 went to David Morris at Standardsville, Virginia. He had an adjusted weaning weight of 755 pounds, ratio 100, test ADG of 3.47, ratio 109, and an adjusted yearling weight of 1141, ratio 106. His EPDs were birth weight +3.5, weaning weight +22, maternal milk 0 and yearling weight +35. Lot #802 bull brought $1500 also went to W.O. Harris, Jr. at Mineral, Virginia.

All bulls in the test and sale were consigned by members of the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association. The sale manager was Mike Gothard of Virginia Sale Services at Staunton, Virginia, and the auctioneer was Tom Gammon.
