Milking Management and Mastitis Control Cow College is scheduled for March 2 and 3 at Virginia Tech's Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center. The program will start at 10:00 AM on the 2nd and finish by 3:00 PM on the 3rd. Topics include:

Basic understanding of milk secretion and development of mastitis infections and inflammation
Mastitis detection: Bulk tank tests, use and interpretation of DHI somatic cell counts
Proper milking procedures
The role of the environment in mastitis prevention
Heifer mastitis and control
Economics of mastitis
Quality assurance: mastitis treatment, drug residue avoidance
Dry cow management and treatment
Milking equipment's role in mastitis; stray voltage
Factors influencing milk quality
Cleaning and sanitizing milking equipment
Heat stress and cooling
Fly control

This program is intended for dairy farm owners and managers, hired milkers, and agribusiness professionals working with these subjects.
