Second Year of Avian Bowl a Success -- Sections for 2000 Contests Released

Livestock Update, January 2000

Phillip J. Clauer, Extension Poultry Specialist, Small Flocks/4-H Youth, Virginia Tech

The first year of the Avian Bowl program in Virginia was a great success. The Rockingham team won the state contest and represented Virginia well at the national 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in November 1999. Virginia placed 4th after a close loss to the 2nd place team from Minnesota. California was 1st and Kentucky 3rd in this years National event. Congratulations to team members Elizabeth Dofflemyer, Eric Paulson, Jared Shank, Alex Welsh and their coach, Bonnie Hutchison, for an excellent first year.

The approved sections for the 2000 National Avian Bowl are as follows:

1.Raising Waterfowl23 - 33

5.Eggcyclopedia (Oiling - Yolk)135 - 150
6.General Care of Pet Birds165 - 166

I have copies of the National Avian Bowl manual in my office. If you would like to get a team ready for state, please let me know. Also, we are still looking for anyone to help sponsor district qualifying events for 2000. Contact Phillip J. Clauer as soon as possible if you are interested.
