2005 Culpeper Senior BCIA Bull Sale Results

The 48th Annual Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association Culpeper Senior Bull Sale was held Saturday, December 10, 2005 at Culpeper Agricultural Enterprises in Culpeper, Virginia. Eighty-two bulls representing the top sixty percent of the 142 bulls tested sold for average price of $2449. The sale included 78 Angus which averaged $2477, 2 Simmental x Angus averaged $2550, and 2 Charolais averaged $1250.

The lead bull in the sale, Lot 5 consigned by Quaker Hill Farms of Louisa, Virginia sold to BHB Cattle Company of Clinton, Missouri at $11,500 for one half semen interest and full possession. This September 2004 son of Rito 2V1 of 2536 1407 was the high-gaining bull of the test with an ADG of 4.91, ratio 128 and yearling weight of 1361 pounds, ratio 112. The bull posted EPDs of +9 CE, +1.1 BW, +64 WW, +28 MM, +103 YW, +0.39 IMF, +0.58 REA, and +49 $B. Sara Pratt of Atkins, Virginia sold two-third semen interest and full possession of Lot 124 to Mt. Rush Farm of Buckingham, Virginia for $6200. This high-indexing son of GAR Precision 9296 posted a test ADG of 4.60, ratio 120, and a yearling weight of 1413, ratio 117 along with a BW EPD of -0.1 and YW EPD +88.

Echo Ridge Farm of Atkins, Virginia consigned Lot 126 which sold to Walter Robinson and Glenn Wheeler of Glade Spring, Virginia for $4600. This son of Rito 0014 of 4B24 2000 Plus had a yearling weight of 1367, ratio 113 along with EPDs of +0.6 BW, +59 WW, +105 YW and an ultrasound REA 15.0. Another Echo Ridge bull, Lot 122 sired by GAR Exaltation 3144, commanded $4100 from Charlie Holbrook of Bluefield, Virginia. Also selling for $4100 was Lot 45, from Daybreak Farm LLC in Millwood Virginia and going to Thomas Fulcher of Amherst, Virginia. This son of Skyway Hills Power Design had a BW EPD of +1.1, YW EPD +78, REA EPD of +0.59 and had the largest adjusted ultrasound REA of the sale of 15.6, ratio 118.

The breeder group award was presented to Edgewood Farm of Williamsburg, Virginia. Two bulls in this consignment group sold for $4000. Lot 51, went to Thomas Fulcher of Amherst, Virginia. This calving ease son of Rito 6I6 of 4B20 6807 was the low BW EPD bull of the sale at -0.9 and had a YW EPD +85 complimented by ADG and YW ratios of 127 and 113. Lot 55, sired by GAR Grid Maker, also sold for $4000 and went to Palo Alto Farm in Mineral, Virginia.

Quaker Hill Farms of Louisa, Virginia consigned the Simmental x Angus bulls. Both were Angus-sired by GDAR SVG Traveler 234D. Lot 402 sold for $2900 and went to Linda Moomau of Oakland, Maryland. This bull posted a test YW ratio of 111, along with WW EPD +38 and YW EPD +70.

All bulls in the test and sale were consigned by members of the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association. Bulls were tested at the Culpeper bull test station operated by Glenmary Farm, Tom and Kim Nixon, at Rapidan, Virginia. The sale was managed by Virginia BCIA and the Virginia Cattlemen's Association, and the auctioneer was Mike Jones.
