MARE Center Yearling Sale

Livestock Update, November 1996

Wendell Cooper, MARE Center

Virginia Tech's Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension Center (MARE Center) held their 5th Annual Yearling Auction on October 13, 1996.

Twenty-six yearlings were offered bringing a total of $62,900.

This offering was led by the first crop of their young Blushing Groom sire, Gettysburg Address. His six geldings and three fillies averaged $3,378 and included the sale topper, a filly out of the Secretariat mare Cup Custard. This beautiful chestnut filly went to Mr. Charles F. Engle of Lincoln, Virginia for $16,000.

Yearlings sired by Lava were also well accepted averaging $2,438.

The average overall was $2,419.

Proceeds from these auctions go toward the operation of the Center whose primary mission centers on nutritional research of the horse with particular emphasis on supplementing animals on pasture.
